Is Swine Flu the Calm Before the Storm?

The head of WHO asks: Is Swine Flu the calm before the storm? Has the Swine Flu given us a grace period? No one can really say. The number of cases has surpassed 9000 with more than 74 deaths to date.

The WHO strongly urges the international community to use this grace period wisely. The WHO is urging the world to look closely at anything and everything we can do, collectively, to protect developing countries from once again, bearing the brunt of a global contagion.

The WHO is warning pregnant women. They appear to be at greater risk of complications from the H1N1 swine flu virus and one in four cases have suffered vomiting and diarrhea with the bug.

So far in the United States, seven deaths have been linked to the swine flu, although it's unclear whether these were caused by the virus or pre-existing conditions. Nationwide, at least 5,123 cases of H1N1 flu have been reported, although the actual number of people affected may be higher.

Early steps toward an H1N1 vaccine, the process could take between five and six months from the time the virus appeared to when the vaccine would be available to the public, officials have said. If a vaccine is produced, we could see the production of pilot lots, and clinical trials, beginning as soon as late June.

H1N1 flu activity has been confirmed in 22 states and appears to be most active in the Southwest.
